Note: Conversation Follows Free 4pm Screening in the Walter Reade Theater

In conjunction with the New York premiere of his first feature film, Jellyfish Eyes, renowned artist Takashi Murakami will present a collection of his animated works and discuss his signature artistic style. The screening will be followed by a conversation between Takashi Murakami and Jay Sanders.

Known for his conception of “Superflat” art, which blurs the line between the “high” and “low” arts, as well as for his collaborations with Kanye West, Pharrell Williams, and Louis Vuitton via Marc Jacobs, the work of Murakami is deeply rooted in Japanese popular culture and draws inspiration from classic anime and manga. The artist founded the Hiropon factory in Tokyo in 1996, which later evolved into Kaikai Kiki Co., a large-scale art production and art management corporation. Murakami's work has been shown extensively in venues around the world including the Metropolitan Museum of Art; Qatar Museums Authority; Palace of Versailles; Museum of Contemporary Art, Los Angeles, Brooklyn Museum; Museum für Kunst, Frankfurt; Guggenheim Museum, Bilbao; Fondation Cartier Pour l'art Contemporain, Paris; Serpentine Gallery, London; Museum of Contemporary Art, Tokyo; and Museum of Fine Arts, Boston.

Jay Sanders is Curator and Curator of Performance at the Whitney Museum, and co-curated the 2012 Whitney Biennial with Elisabeth Sussman. His most recent projects include Sarah Michelson: 4, a live performance by the 2012 Bucksbaum award-winner, and Rituals of Rented Island: Object Theater, Loft Performance, and the New Psychodrama - Manhattan, 1970-80. In Spring 2016 he will organize an solo exhibition by Laura Poitras at the new Whitney in Chelsea.
