The 2009 U.S. publication of Juan Gabriel Vásquez's The Informers, the Colombian literary star’s first novel to be translated into English, was greeted with overwhelming critical acclaim; his work has been praised by critics worldwide as well as fellow writers including Jonathan Franzen, E. L. Doctorow, and Mario Vargas Llosa, who calls Vásquez “one of the most original new voices of Latin American literature."  His new novel The Sound of Things Falling is Vásquez's most personal, most contemporary work to date, and has already won top literary prizes in Spain, England and Italy. The author delves into his country’s troubled history, examining the Colombian drug trade and the dangerous human consequences that politics have on individuals and families. Edmund White’s front-page review in the New York Times Book Review notes calls the novel “a page turner, but it’s also a deep meditation on fate and death.”  Vasquez talks tonight with an interviewer TBA in the beautiful Housing Works Bookstore Café for this unique event co-hosted by Greenlight Bookstore; a portion of book sales benefit Housing Works.
