In the wake of the disastrous wars in Iraq and Afghanistan, the Obama administration has shifted US imperial strategy away from occupations and counter-insurgency. But contrary to Obama’s promise in his second inaugural address, he has not opened a new era of peace. His administration very much intends to maintain the unipolar world order against all potential rivals. It has opted to do so by relying on international and regional allies, special operations forces, and drones to carry through its interventions in the Middle East, Central Asia, and Africa. By ending the occupations, Obama has also freed up forces to implement his infamous Pivot to Asia to counter-balance China’s rise as an imperial power. Instead of ending war and inter-imperial conflict, Obama is stoking the fires of conflict that will shape the geopolitics in the 21st century.
