Using diary entries, letters, and photographs, Ms. Seigel's paper will cover Sigmund Freud's response to exile and illness, as well as his reception in England. The year is full and well documented, including the huge interest in Freud when he arrived in Britain, the range of visitors he received, from HG Wells and Salvador Dali to Leonard and Virginia Woolf, the reconstruction of his Viennese study in residential north London, Freud's writing at this time, including the completion of Moses and Monotheism, fear for family remaining in Austria and the relationship with other refugees from Nazism.

CAROL SEIGEL has been Director of the Freud Museum London since 2009. She is a historian by training, and studied at Cambridge University and the University of London. She has worked in museums for nearly twenty years, including as a Curator at the Jewish Museum and running the public programme at the Museum of London. Carol Seigel is currently on a year's leave of absence, living in New York and working on behalf of the Freud Museum in the US.
